5 Most Common Teaching Styles
The Lecturer
The lecturer teaching style is the formal authoritative style and the one used in most schools I’ve seen.
The advantages of this style are the lectures are easy to prepare and it presents the opportunity to teach large groups.
Disadvantages are the retention of information is low and no active learning has taken place.
Demonstrator
This teaching style is similar to the lecturer except more involvement of the students is present.
Advantages of this style is it incorporates other teaching formats. The disadvantage is it may not accommodate all students' needs.
Hybrid
The hybrid teaching style is more of a balance between the instructor and student-centered approaches.
Advantage to this style is students have more engagement. However, it requires more from the instructor. It can be slower and less focused.
Facilitator
In this style, the instructor directs inquiry-based learning. This has the student be more self-sufficient, but it’s difficult to use with theory heavy content.
Delegator
The instructor who teaches in this style likes students to learn in groups to share information about the subject.
It’s peer-to-peer learning. The advantage is it encourages learning in a collaborative setting.
The disadvantage is it’s possible it will be inefficient as students are to find the correct answers themselves.
There are other teaching styles, but these are the five most common.
